If you sell on Amazon, Etsy, or eBay, you already know: your main product image must have a clean white background. Amazon explicitly requires it. Studies consistently show white-background images get more clicks, more conversions, and fewer returns — because shoppers can see exactly what they're buying.
The problem? Professional product photography costs money. Photoshop takes skill. And most online tools require you to upload your product photos to someone else's server.
This guide shows you how to do it for free, in your browser, with zero uploads and zero sign-up.
Why marketplaces require white backgrounds
Amazon's main image requirements are specific for a reason: consistency. When every listing has a white background, shoppers can compare products without visual noise. The product stands out against the white grid. Category pages look clean and professional.
Amazon's official rules for main product images:
- Background must be pure white (RGB 255, 255, 255)
- The product must fill at least 85% of the image frame
- No additional text, logos, or watermarks on the main image
- Image must be at least 1000×1000px for zoom to work
Etsy and eBay are less strict, but white or light neutral backgrounds still perform significantly better in search results and on category pages.
Step-by-step: Create a white-background product photo
Step 1: Start with a good product photo
You don't need a professional studio. Here's what matters:
- Even lighting — natural window light works well. Avoid harsh shadows across the product.
- Contrast between product and background — shooting on a contrasting surface (light product on dark background, or vice versa) gives the AI cleaner edges to work with.
- Sharp focus — blur reduces edge accuracy.
- Resolution — aim for at least 1500×1500px. Amazon recommends 2000×2000px.
A phone camera in good light is entirely sufficient. The AI handles the rest.
Step 2: Remove the background
Go to our Product Photo Background Remover. Upload your product photo.
The AI (U²-Net) will analyze the image and isolate your product. For most product shots — especially those without complex materials like glass or sheer fabric — the result is excellent. Processing takes 1–5 seconds.
Step 3: Apply a white background
In the Adjustments panel on the right, click Solid color. Then click the white swatch (or type #ffffff in the custom color picker).
The result updates in real time. Your product will now be composited over pure white.
Step 4: Fine-tune the edges
For most product photos, the default settings are perfect. If you see rough edges:
- Edge Feather — move it to 1–3px for a softer, more natural edge blend. Don't go higher or the edges look blurry.
- Threshold — if small background fragments survived around the product, increase the threshold slightly (10–20%) to remove them.
Step 5: Download and check
Click Download PNG. Open the file on your computer and zoom in on the edges — especially corners and detail areas. The image should have clean, crisp edges against white.
Pro tip: Open the PNG in Preview (Mac) or Photos (Windows) and check that the background is truly white — not off-white or transparent with a white screen behind it. You want RGB 255,255,255 all the way.
Step 6: Resize if needed
Amazon recommends 2000×2000px square images. If your original was landscape or portrait, you may need to center the product on a white square canvas.
You can do this for free in:
- Canva — create a 2000×2000 canvas, set background to white, drag your PNG in, resize and center.
- GIMP — free and powerful for this kind of canvas work.
- Preview on Mac — Tools → Adjust Size; then add white canvas via Image → Canvas Size.
Tips for difficult product types
Glass and transparent products
Transparent materials are hard for any AI — the algorithm can't always tell the difference between a transparent foreground and the background. For glass bottles, vases, and similar items, shoot against a contrasting dark background and use a slightly higher feather value (2–4px) to soften the glass edges.
Products with fine detail (jewelry, electronics)
Jewelry with thin chains and electronics with complex wiring benefit from the highest-resolution source you have. The model runs inference at 1024px, so fine details may get simplified. Use the Threshold slider to keep only high-confidence foreground areas.
Products with the same color as the background
A white product on a white background is genuinely difficult. For these items, consider shooting on a colored background (light gray, light blue) and removing that instead. The contrast helps the AI dramatically.
Batch processing for large catalogs
If you have 10–20 products to process at once, use our Batch Background Remover. Upload up to 20 images, select "White" as the background type, and download all processed images as a single ZIP file.
Does this meet Amazon's "pure white" requirement?
When you select the white swatch and download, the output is a flat PNG with RGB(255, 255, 255) background. This meets Amazon's pure-white requirement. The composite is done entirely in the browser's canvas API, which produces accurate hex color fills.
To verify: open the downloaded PNG in any photo editor and use the eyedropper tool on the background — it should read #FFFFFF (R:255, G:255, B:255).
